Pro Sizing Tips

📐

The Tape Test

Use painter's tape to outline rug sizes on your floor. Live with it for a day to see how it feels.

⬆️

When in Doubt, Go Bigger

A rug that's too small looks like an afterthought. Bigger always looks more intentional.

🪑

The Furniture Rule

All legs on, front legs on, or all legs off—but never just some legs on the rug.

📏

Leave Breathing Room

Keep 12-18" of bare floor showing between rug edges and walls for balance.

Sizing FAQs

For most living rooms, a 5'×7' or 6'×9' rug works best. The rug should be large enough for at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs to sit on it. For larger living rooms or open-concept spaces, consider an 8'×10' or larger.

Yes, ideally your rug should extend at least 6-12 inches beyond your sofa on all sides. This creates visual balance and ensures the seating area feels anchored and cohesive.

For a queen bed, a 6'×9' rug placed horizontally at the foot of the bed works well. If you want the rug to extend on three sides, go with an 8'×10'. The rug should extend at least 18-24 inches beyond each side of the bed.

Generally, leave 12-18 inches of bare floor between the rug edge and the walls. In smaller rooms, 8-12 inches is acceptable. This creates a frame effect that makes the room feel intentionally designed.

Yes. A rug that's too large can make a room feel smaller and cramped. If your rug touches or goes under the walls, it's too big. Always leave some floor visible around the perimeter.

Your rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond all sides of your dining table. This ensures chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out. For a 6-person table, a 6'×9' minimum; for 8+ people, go with 8'×10' or larger.

Measure your room dimensions first. Then, use painter's tape to mark out different rug sizes on the floor. Live with the tape for a day or two to see how different sizes feel before ordering.

A runner should be about 4-6 inches narrower than your hallway on each side and stop about 6-12 inches before doorways or the end of the hall. For a standard hallway, 2'6"×8' or 2'6"×10' works well.

Absolutely. A larger rug makes a room feel more spacious and unified. A small rug can make furniture look disconnected and the room feel choppy. When in doubt, go bigger.

CloudMat offers four area rug sizes: 3'×5' ($59), 5'×7' ($99), 6'×9' ($139), and 6'7"×13'2" ($249). We also have runners in 2'×6', 2'6"×8', 2'6"×10', and 3'×12'. All sizes feature 3cm cushioned foam and machine washable covers.
